The game was played in the heat of Hangzhou but Leeds weathered the conditions and outplayed the Chinese Second Division side to win easily. New Manager Terry Venables was on holiday and the squad was supervised by Eddie Gray and Brian Kidd and they gave everyone a chance, making eleven substitutions. Harry Kewell opened the scoring after ten minutes and Mark Viduka got the second in the thirty-first minute to complete the scoring for the first half. At half-time Jonathan Woodgate came off for Michael Duberry, Olivier Dacourt came off in favour of Jacob Burns, Stephen McPhail gave way to Jason Wilcox and Mark Viduka allowed Michael Bridges to take another step along the road to recovery from long-term injury. Seven minutes later there were another three changes as Danny Mills replaced Frazer Richardson, Robbie Fowler came on for Harry Kewell and Robbie Keane came on for Alan Smith. It did not take Robbie Keane long to announce his presence as he had increased the score to 3-0 four minutes after coming on. In the next minute United made their final four changes with Danny Milosevic taking over in goal from Paul Robinson, Lucas Radebe replacing Dominic Matteo in central defence and captain, Ian Harte replacing Shane Cansdell-Sherriff at Left Back and Jamie McMaster coming on for Eirik Bakke in midfield. Lucas Radebe looked perplexed after what seemed a sound tackle was adjudged to be a penalty in a dubious decision by the local referee. Danny Mills got the fourth for Leeds in the seventieth minute and Robbie Fowler completed the scoring in the eighty-fourth minute.
